When picking out a piece with a gemstone, it is easy to get caught up in the colour. However, one of the most important factors is the durability of the stone. Not all gemstones are created equal, and some require much more care than others.
Hard Stones for Everyday Wear: If the gift is a ring or a bracelet intended for daily use, you want a stone that can handle life’s bumps and scratches.
The Leaders: Diamonds are the hardest natural substance, making them the ultimate choice for durability. Sapphire, Aquamarine, Emerald, and Rubies are also incredibly tough and resistant to scratching.
Soft Stones and "Organic" Gems: These are often better suited for earrings or necklaces where they won't be knocked against hard surfaces.
The Delicate List: Opal, Pearl, Amethyst, and Emeralds are much softer. Opals contain water and can crack if they get too dry or cold, while pearls can be scratched by something as simple as a metal clasp or a rough fabric.
Special Care: These stones can be sensitive to chemicals like perfumes, lotions, hairspray, and even household cleaners such as dish soap.
